Frequently Asked Questions

Who is North American Feis Commission?

We are an organization of Feis Managers who are responsible for the running of Feiseanna in Canada & the United States. We are made up of the Feis Chairmen and women who come from all walks of life and are, usually, volunteers. Many Feis Managers are also Adjudicators and/or Teachers. Many Feiseanna have links with one or more schools of Irish Dancing as the committee base is usually drawn from the parental group. The NAFC has been in Feis administration since 1950 and over the years has adjusted to the needs of all of the Irish Dancing communities.

Who is Coimisiún le Rincí Gaelacha?

This commission was formed in 1929 by Conradh na Gaeilge (The Gaelic League) to monitor the developments and style of Irish Traditional Step Dancing. The Commissioners are members of Conradh na Gaeilge, Adjudicators, Teachers, the serving President of the North American Feis Commission and lay people. The Adjudicators and Teachers are coopted on to the Commission on a formula set down by An Coimisiún and is representative of the Irish Dancing communities in Ireland, England & Wales, Scotland, The Netherlands, Australia, Canada, New Zealand, South Africa and the United States of America. All other Adjudicators and Teachers are fee paying members at large and when speaking do so only for their own school which is, usually, a private business venture.

Who is the Irish Dancing Teachers Association of North America (IDTANA)?

This is an association of all the Adjudicators and Teachers in Canada and the United States. The first T.C.R.G.'s were granted to North Americans in 1963 and the first exams were held on this continent in 1967, some 17 years after the founding of the North-American Feis Commission. The I.D.T.A.N.A. has an elected executive committee and has regional directors in seven geographic areas. The IDTANA sponsor the North-American Dancing Championships and all Regional Oireachtasi, which are the qualifying events for Oireachtas Rince na Cruinne (The World's).

Who is the authorized body on Feiseanna in North America?

The NAFC is the only authorized body appointed to make rules for Feiseanna in North America. The IDTANA makes rules for matters affecting the dancing discipline. Over the past 4 years, in particular, most of the rule changes have come about by consensus as a result of the close working relationships that have developed between our two leaderships.

What are the implications for not following the rules of the NAFC, you might ask?

The option open to the NAFC, upon receiving a complaint, is to refuse to sanction the non-complying Feis. The contract between An Coimisin, the IDTANA and the NAFC states that no member of the ITDANA or An Coimisiún can adjudicate at a non-registered Feis under penalty of suspension of their permit to adjudicate.

Must my Feis be associated with a TCRG or ADCRG or TMRF in order to run?

There is NO rule which states that a Feis MUST be associated with a TCRG or ADCRG or TMRF in order to run.
